Work / Life Issues
Emerging work/life statistics reveal the compared to child care issues, eldercare tends to become more insidious, more complicated, longer lasting, and more likely to affect employees as an issue. As a study by the MetLife Mature Market Instiutute reports:
Nearly one fourth of all households had at least one adult who had cared for an elderly person sometime during the previous year
It is estimated that over the next 10 years, the number of employees caring for an adult will increase to between 11 and 15.6 million people---about 1 in 10 workers
84% of the employees surveyed had to use at least some of their time during work hours to care for an adult with infirmities, even if it’s just time to make a phone call
Employees have to use sick and vacation time and some had to quit their jobs to care for their elderly relatives. Spread over an average of eight years of caring for an adult while working, this translates into an average loss of almost $660, 000 over a lifetime in lost wages.
Comprehensive EAPs offer Work/Life Assistance programs as “wrap-around” choices to enhance the total service package. These Work/Life programs cover a wide range of topics from childcare to eldercare, adoption, college planning, home cleaning services, financial planning, and parenting concers.
